We often stop at Casas Grandes on the way in and or out of Copper Canyon. We do this because it saves out guests money and adds a huge experience for everyone- even people (like me) who are not crazy about pottery. It has been termed the “Miracle of Mata Ortiz” and indeed it is. This tiny town has evolved into a major pottery mecca with some 400 of its 2000 people actively potting. Encouraged by Spencer MacCallum years ago, Juan Quezada, then his family, then other families, then many people of all ages developed and honed their skills and creativity.
We will have shows at Southwind Art Gallery in Topeka, Ks and at Cinema Gallery in Urbana, IL in the Christmas 2013 season and here are some of the potters who will be featured.
Efrain Lucero is one of the “unknown” but very creative potters in the village. He and his daughters produce some fine animal oriented pots that are well priced and colorful.
Eli Navarrez and his wife do fine painting and even travel to the US from time to time to do presentations.
Esperanza Tena and Eusebio Sandoval specialize in bright colors and nice proportions an their pots.
