Dave and his team know Copper Canyon inside out and are the leaders in culturally rich, small group experiences there as well as a few select areas of Mexico. This trip is for travelers…flex in itinerary, filled with options and fascinating… a once in a lifetime trip!

  • Our guides are local, licensed, smart and fun! All of our hotels are selected for authenticity and quality of hospitality, great food, and cleanliness. All have private rooms with baths and linens.
  • Your itinerary is created just for you and there are multiple options along the way. This makes for a more relaxed, serendipitous journey that lets you experience more of true, authentic Mexico. Here is a starting point for planning your journey….every trip is unique.

June 19- Arrive Chihuahua City (CUU), Plaza Hotel.

You will arrive at the Chihuahua City airport (CUU) and look for your guide with my sign outside of security. You will be staying near the plaza and be sure to take in the cathedral and perhaps some of the interesting historic sites in that area—and the market!

June 20- Creel, The Lodge at Creel (B). After some of the morning in Chihuahua City you will travel by van up through Mennonite country into the Sierras. Perhaps lunch in Cuauhtémoc or Creel.

You will travel today through the vast apple orchards of the Mennonites who migrated here some 100 years ago. Chihuahua City is full of history –think Camino Real and Pancho Villa and tons and tons of silver! Enjoy a farewell dinner at one of the great local eateries. Creel is the front door to Copper Canyon, surrounded by mysterious rock formations, Raramuri villages, rich forests as well as lakes and waterfalls. In town there are cafes, museums, and comfortable hotels.

June 21- This morning to explore around Creel then board the train to take in the heart of the Copper Canyon …then by van back through the canyons to Cerocahui and San Isidro Lodge. (D)

The Copper Canyon train line took some 100 years to complete and is one of the world’s top train experiences. Get to the windows as you travel and listen as your guide will point out 100s of wonders along the way. Cerocahui is tucked some 20 kilometers above the Bahuichivo train stop. The cabins at cozy San Isidro Lodge are tended by a set of brothers—Mario, Tito, Luis—of Raramuri descent. It can be a bit chilly on winter nights, but good fires, delicious food, quite nights and nearby vistas make this place a great taste of Sierra Madre life.

June 22- Relax today at San Isidro and travel also to Gallego overlook high above the canyons. Option to travel to Urique at the bottom of the canyons at the groups discretion.(B,D).

Urique is the site of the famous “Born to Run” race featuring the Raramuri runners…and the setting for much of the best-selling book.

June 23 – Divisadero, Mirador Hotel (B,D). You will have plenty of time to finish your Cerocahui experience, then back up the winding road to the highlands and your room with a view from the rim.

The iconic Mirador Lodge is the center point of the dramatic Divisadero area. From here you can walk along the rim or just relax and take it all in from this grand lodge.

June 24- All day to explore the Divisadero area. (B,L,D).

The Divisadero area is the home of the huge gondola/zipline system—a great way to get immersed in the canyons. Options here also for hiking, horse riding, visits to Raramuri areas, shopping, biking, wall climbing—and of course just relaxing with a drink above the canyons—don’t miss the sunset!

June 25- This morning to relax with the grand view, then back through the canyons and valleys to Chihuahua City (Plaza Hotel) and perhaps enjoy on of the central eateries. (B)

June 26 – Fly from CUU today (B)
