Authentic is according to dictionary.com “not false or copied; genuine; real: an authentic antique”.
I used the word authentic as the first word in the name of this company because I wanted people to experience the true Copper Canyon with all the culture, history, people, and places. I wanted them to be there…not just go there. I love the place and I wanted them to love it as well.
Planning and preparation…the hard part.
I went to work in the early days to travel around, up and down the train line in Copper Canyon getting deeply familiar with the place. I invested weeks and weeks, being in the places where people usually go (like Chihauhau City and Creel and Los Mochis) and the especially investigating the little towns where groups rarely go (like Cuiteco and Temoris and San Juanito). I wanted to put together a package of possibilities for our trips there so that we could offer people cool options that fit with THEIR interests- not what is easiest or cheapest for us.
Each trip is unique.
So what we do is combine what is doable in 7-10 days from1000s of genuine options (based on the interests of the guests) with a huge dose of a profoundly relaxed atmosphere…and you have an authentic experience. People love it.
This is miles away from a bus trip.
I am sure they do a good job…this place is so amazing that you would have to be a genius from travel hell to mess it up. But we avoid the slam bam approach that leaves you feeling like you just went on a trip- you should expect more, especially from the Sierra Madres.
Another point about the canned trips (which are never as cheap as they advertise to be) is that they usually involve lots of bus time coming and going and (it is hard for me to write this- so painful!) just ONE day on the train. ONE DAY. This is one of the world’s most incredible railways and it should be fully experience- the heart of it twice in different lights if possible. I’m glad to get that off of my chest!
Authentic means what you come home with.
Every vacation ends and we return t the normal, but from and authentic experience like on of our journeys, you come back with something that will change your life. The people, the fascinating culture, a long evening over a home made meal…you can plan a train ride, but coming home with this sort of treasure is rare. This is precisely what we specialize in.
The team makes all the difference…and the values.
As I have assembled my team there in Copper Canyon, I have insisted that they get it on what we are trying to deliver for our guests. I have 3 values (valores): authentic, excellent, collaboration with real Mexicans. I insist on these and all we do revolves around them. I have an excellent team there…Alfredo, Diana, Gustavo, and more…and this is the way the operate. I have rejected a slew of other potential guides because they just have a different way.
