Copper Canyon Train

NOTE: From time to time the Copper Canyon train changes schedule and pricing….and the CHEPE site is hard to work with. There are now two trains for public use and the daily schedule is tricky. For one thing, people say online that the only way to travel in the daylight is to travel from Creel toward Los Mochis–the east to west way. This is not correct–actually either way works–and the main isuue is getting your day and time correct.

Call Dave today for details on the new offerings for CHEPE…and no we will not buy tickets for you– but you can travel with us with one of our skilled local Copper Canyon guides.

The amazing Copper Canyon train is of course a big part of every Copper Canyon tour we do.

The amazing Copper Canyon train is of course a big part of every Copper Canyon tour we do… and just for your info, either side of the train is fine.

The Copper Canyon train is called CHEPE and it is really the only way to get through the Sierra Madres in a reasonable fashion. The roads, though improved greatly are still long, dusty or muddy, rough and slow. The train trip through Copper Canyon gives a long, slow look at the vast system of canyons. There is no sleeping area on the train and most people get off 2-3 times and stay over in the lodges along the way. Currently the train goes from Creel to Los Mochis and back.

CHEPE Schedule

Trains run almost on alternate days—call us for details or see the CHEPE site.

Signs at the Copper Canyon train stop in Creel.

The directional sign at Creel from CHEPE- the new train goes from Creel and the old train goes on alternate days end to end –  from Chihuahua City to Los Mochis. But the old train is only open to locals.

My experience is that while the trains may run a bit late as the day goes on, they tend to leave on time in the morning with no regard for ticketed passengers who may be standing on the platform drinking coffee and gazing at the sunrise- I was ticked!

I’m Dave Hensleigh, owner and guide with Authentic Copper Canyon. I am a  train lover and a familiar face on CHEPE….like I have traveled it some 70 times or so and still love it.
