The little town of Urique in Chihuahua sits right in the bottom of one of the canyons known collectely as Copper Canyon. Today this little town is hopping with preparations for the big race this Sunday, March 2. Their will be a kids 5K, dancing, eating and drinking and then at sunrise on Sunday the big race.
Many of the characters from “Born to Run” will be there…Mama Tita cooking away at her greasy spoon. Arnolfo Quimare eating his early pre race meal of eggs and Nopal with coffee–his sons sleeping until the last minute before they emerge to run the course.
I saw Miguel a couple of weeks ago at San Isidro and he seemed to be getting pumped for the race–as much as he ever seems pumped for anything. I think he has a little chip on his shoulder from last year when he ran second to some dude from Puebla. He had won the race 3 years ago as well as 2 years ago. He thought he was leading and we did too–but he got beat by a few minutes.
I am keeping my aye on another of our Copper Canyon Running Tour team, Horacio Estrada. He ran well at UROC and he seems to have some resolve to move up in the Ultra scene.
Fred from Run Rabbit Run
Fred Abramowitz the race director at the Steamboat 50 and 100 miler, Run Rabbit Run will be in Copper Canyon on one of our running trips in two weeks. He is interested in these runners and we are looking for ways to comnitnue to bring them up to Colorado. Last year Arnolfo and Horacio ran well in the 50 miler and we would like to get them back there.
